Perkunas was in love with the goddess called Wayne («Rainbow») and was going to marry her but on the day of the wedding she ran away with Velnyas. Gromovnik (Perkunas) cursed and casted her down where she became the goddess of the earth Zhemina. From that time Perkunas constantly was fighting with Velnyas hitting him with lightning (ax or hammer of the thunderer) and a thunderstorm is the culmination of the battle. Thus, the destructive action promotes fertility as it is being accompanied by rain.
It’s amazing to live knowing that the storm is not just the thunder but the whole battle the cause of which is escape of the beloved who can not be forgotten forever! Sitting in their hut in the pouring rain the family of the ancient Balts was dividing. Someone was on the side of Perkunas someone supported smart Velnyas, well women of course were on the side of the beautiful Rainbow. How much drama and sense! The big lesson from the past for us, modern and advanced is how you need to appreciate every smallest event to be able to contemplate and see the action in all the heavenly powers.
So what bounded mysterious Baltic tribes with us the Slavs? Digging into history we found the answer to this question. Sizable proximity of Slavic and Baltic peoples is undeniable! As proof of this we will focus on three facts that convince us of this.
The first factor is lingual.
According to the calculations of linguists Slavs and Balts are related by the 1600 general linguistic roots and the set of functional words. Baltic and Slavic languages are closer to each other than either of them to any of the Indo-European languages. It is also difficult not to notice the language similarities in mythology. For example, the names of the pagan gods of the ancient Rus are Diy, Perun, Veles, Usen, and for the Lithuanians and Latvians they are Dievas, Perkunas, Velnyas and Usinsh.
The second factor is territorial.
Iranian nomads (Scythians, Sarmatians) were masters of Ukrainian steppes to V century AD, after that this place was conquered by the Turks. To the north of them Baltic tribes lived in the area of the forest up to the Baltic Sea. Thus, all Ukrainian woodlands (Chernigov, Zhitomir, Chernigov, north Kiev region ) from the III-II millennium BC to V century AD were inhabited by ancient Balts.
The third factor are similarity and unity of cultures.
Indisputable fact is that the culture of the great Kievan Rus is a Slavic-Balt culture which laid the basis of the Eastern Slavic state.
